The Virgilia Jean-Louis Foundation

The Virgilia Jean-Louis Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to combating illiteracy in Haiti through accessible, high-quality education. Its first initiative, Teach Haiti, focuses on establishing bilingual (English and French) schools in underserved communities.

Rooted in a deeply personal story, the foundation honors Virgilia Jean-Louis, a woman who was denied the opportunity to learn to read as a child in rural Haiti. This initiative seeks to ensure that no child faces the same barrier

Core Values

We believe education should go beyond the classroom. Our model is built on four interconnected initiatives designed to develop the whole individual—academically, professionally, physically, and as a leader within their community.

Together, these pillars create a sustainable ecosystem that equips students not only to succeed—but to transform Haiti’s future.

Our Mission:

A future where every child in Haiti has the ability to read, write, and create a better life through education. Through our Teach Haiti initiative, we aim to empower children and communities with the fundamental right to read, write, and communicate—opening doors to opportunity, independence, and generational change. Our education model focuses on modern initiatives and development.

Our Vision:

To empower Haiti’s youth through holistic education that combines literacy, vocational training, agriculture, and leadership development, equipping students to thrive academically, professionally, and personally while creating lasting change in their communities. Our model will include four pillars of impact: Teach Haiti, Train Haiti, Lead Haiti, and Grow Haiti.

Teach Haiti | Education Initiative:

Building the Foundation Through Literacy & Learning: Teach Haiti is the cornerstone of our mission, focused on providing children with access to high-quality, bilingual education in English and French.

In many underserved communities, children lack access to consistent schooling and foundational literacy. Teach Haiti addresses this gap by creating structured learning environments where students can develop essential academic skills.

  • Bilingual instruction in English and French

  • Early literacy development (reading, writing, comprehension)

  • Core academic subjects including math, science, and language arts

  • Structured classroom environments that support consistent learning

Train Haiti | Trade School & Sports Complex:

Developing Skills, Discipline, and Opportunity: Train Haiti expands education beyond academics by integrating vocational training and athletic development into one dynamic program.

This initiative is designed to prepare students for real-world success by equipping them with practical skills while also providing an outlet for physical activity, teamwork, and personal growth.

  • Introduction to basic health practices and community care

  • Foundational knowledge for entry-level healthcare roles

  • Soccer and volleyball training through coaching & mentorship

  • Organized teams and competitions

Lead Haiti | Leadership & Economic Empowerment:

Developing Informed, Confident leaders for the Future. Lead Haiti is designed to cultivate a generation of leaders who are not only confident—but informed, culturally grounded, and civically aware.

This initiative goes beyond traditional leadership training by incorporating Haitian history and government education, ensuring students understand their country, their rights, and their role in shaping its future.

  • Public speaking and communication training

  • Leadership development and confidence-building

  • Civic responsibility and community engagement

  • Understanding of government systems and public policy

Grow Haiti | Agriculture & Sustainability Initiative:

Cultivating Self-Sufficiency & Community Strength: Grow Haiti focuses on sustainability, food security, and economic empowerment through agriculture. In many areas of Haiti, access to food and sustainable income is a major challenge. This initiative teaches students and communities how to grow, manage, and sustain their own food sources.

  • Hands-on agricultural education

  • Training in modern and sustainable farming techniques

  • School and community-based gardens

  • Food production that supports student nutrition programs

Our Promise

We are not just educating students—we are equipping a generation to read, lead, work, grow, and thrive. This diaspora-led initiative is a direct response to the growing call from changemakers across Haiti who are already doing the work on the ground—rebuilding communities, restoring dignity, and creating pathways for progress. It is rooted in a shared commitment to invest in Haiti’s future while honoring its past. Before foreign occupation, systemic corruption, and the exploitation of its resources, Haiti stood as a symbol of strength, independence, and possibility. As the first Black republic to claim its freedom, Haiti holds a powerful place in global history. Our goal is to help restore that legacy by building a nation where opportunity, education, and stability thrive—one that the diaspora can proudly return to, reconnect with, and celebrate. This is more than development; it is a movement to reclaim Haiti’s rightful place as a leader on the world stage.
