Honoring the Life and Legacy of Nancy Metayer
The Haitian community and all who had the privilege of knowing her continue to reflect on the remarkable life of Nancy Metayer—a woman whose presence, leadership, and purpose left a lasting imprint far beyond any title she held.
As a vice mayor, Nancy was more than a public servant. She was a voice, an advocate, and a bridge between communities. Proud of her Haitian heritage, she consistently uplifted the culture, values, and resilience of the Haitian people. She showed, through both words and action, what it means to lead with intention while staying deeply rooted in community.
Nancy’s passion for environmental causes stood at the center of her work. She understood that protecting the environment was not separate from protecting people, it was directly connected to the health, sustainability, and future of our communities. Whether through local initiatives, advocacy, or partnerships, she pushed for solutions that would create cleaner, safer spaces for generations to come.
Equally important was her unwavering commitment to causes that uplifted the Haitian community. She recognized the unique challenges faced by Haitians at home and abroad and used her platform to advocate for visibility, opportunity, and empowerment. Her work reflected a deep belief in collective progress, ensuring that no voice was overlooked and no community left behind.
But perhaps Nancy’s greatest impact lies in the example she set. She showed that leadership is not about position, it’s about purpose. It’s about showing up, speaking up, and standing firm in what you believe in, even when it’s not easy.
For those who loved her, the question now becomes: how do we carry her legacy forward?
We do it by continuing the work she started. By becoming more engaged in our communities. By advocating for environmental justice. By supporting Haitian-led initiatives and uplifting one another. By stepping into spaces where our voices are needed and refusing to shrink back.
We do it by embodying the same passion, courage, and commitment that Nancy demonstrated every day.
Her life reminds us that impact is not measured by time, but by purpose. And her purpose was clear; serve, uplift, and create lasting change.
As a community, we hold onto her legacy with both pride and responsibility. The Haitian community, especially Haitian women, will never forget Nancy Metayer. She remains a symbol of strength, advocacy, and possibility.
Her work lives on in all of us who choose to continue it.
